J Visa Holders' Guide to Health Insurance

The U.S. Department of State requires every exchange visitor on a J-1 visa, and every J-2 dependent, to keep health insurance for the full program. The core minimums are:

  • Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
  • Repatriation of remains of at least $25,000
  • Medical evacuation to your home country of at least $50,000
  • A deductible of no more than $500 per accident or illness

There are a few more detailed rules, covered in J Visa Insurance Requirements.

Your sponsor may have its own requirements. Your school or program can require more than the federal minimum. You need to meet both. Search for your school on our Student & Scholar page.

How to find the right plan

  1. Search for your school or sponsor to see its requirements.
  2. Compare plans side by side. Every Student & Scholar plan meets the J visa minimums at a $100,000 benefit or higher.
  3. Contact TaiAn, tell us your sponsor, and we'll tell you which plans qualify.

What TaiAn adds

  • A 10% discount when you join the TaiAn Group plan.
  • On TaiAn Patriot Exchange, TaiAn Exchange Select and TaiAn Exchange Select Six, a dependent child under 10 is covered free with each insured parent.
  • Help filling out your school's insurance waiver or compliance form.
  • A J-2 dependent can usually buy coverage alone if the J-1 is covered elsewhere.
