Lowest-cost J-1 and F-1 insurance that meets school requirements
For J-1 scholars and students, the lowest-cost TaiAn plan that meets the US Department of State requirements is TaiAn Plan S (TaiAn Exchange Select) with $100,000 per illness or injury; it starts at $38.10 a month under age 25, or $34.20 a month with the 10% TaiAn group discount. F-1 students must meet their own school's waiver rules, which are often higher than the J-1 minimum. Search for your school on TaiAn's Student & Scholar page, or send us your school's requirements and we'll check them for you.
What are the J-1 minimums?
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation of remains of at least $25,000
- Medical evacuation of at least $50,000
- A deductible of no more than $500 per accident or illness
- An insurer rated "A-" or above by A.M. Best (or an equivalent rating)
TaiAn Plan B and Plan S meet all of these with a benefit of $100,000 or more per illness or injury.
What do universities add?
Many universities set their own waiver rules for F-1 students and J-1 scholars, such as a higher benefit per illness, a lower deductible, or coverage for particular services. If your school asks for more, choose a $250,000 or $500,000 benefit, or a lower deductible. TaiAn Plan B offers a $100 per-illness deductible or an annual deductible of $0, $250 or $500; the annual deductible is offered only by TaiAn.
How much does it cost?
Prices are the same for J-1, J-2, F-1 and F-2 visa holders. You can pay monthly or by the day, so a stay of 2½ months costs 2½ months of premium. If the J-1 or F-1 already has insurance, a J-2 or F-2 dependent can buy a plan alone.
| Age | TaiAn Plan S, $500 annual deductible | TaiAn Plan B, $250 annual deductible |
|---|---|---|
| Under 25 | $38.10 | $53.70 |
| 25 to 49 | $49.80 | $68.70 |
| 50 to 64 | $106.50 | $141.30 |
Plan S or Plan B?
Plan S has the lowest premium and pays 80% after the deductible in the UnitedHealthcare Options network (70% outside it in the US). Plan B costs a little more and pays 100% after the deductible, in or out of network, so your costs stay low if you need a lot of care.
