Seeing a doctor without a referral, and the hospital network

With TaiAn Plan B (TaiAn Patriot Exchange) and TaiAn Plan S (TaiAn Exchange Select) you don't need a referral: you can go straight to a doctor, urgent care clinic, student health center or hospital, and routine office visits need no pre-certification. In the US, both plans use the UnitedHealthcare Options PPO network, with over 1.4 million physicians and outpatient providers and about 93,000 facilities, including over 6,800 hospitals and 14,000 urgent care clinics. Plan B pays the same benefits in or out of network.

Network providers often bill IMG directly, which saves you paying up front. Whether a provider bills directly is the provider's choice.

Where should I go for care?

  • For a non-urgent problem, start at your student health center or an urgent care clinic.
  • Telehealth visits in the US are covered.
  • In a real emergency, go to the nearest emergency room. An emergency room visit for an illness that doesn't lead to a hospital admission has a $250 deductible; for an injury there is none.
  • Bring your IMG ID card and a photo ID.

What needs approval in advance?

Hospital stays, outpatient surgery, CT scans and MRIs, extended care, home nursing, durable medical equipment and transplants must be pre-certified through your MyIMG account. An emergency admission must be certified within 48 hours. Routine office visits don't need it.

How do I find a doctor?

Search the UnitedHealthcare Options network, or use the provider search in your MyIMG account. Outside the US, IMG's International Provider Access network has more than 45,000 physicians and facilities, some with direct billing.

Network figures and benefits are from the TaiAn Patriot Exchange and TaiAn Exchange Select brochures (IMG, 2025) and TaiAn's plan FAQ; the Certificate of Insurance is the only source of the actual benefits.
