J-1 au pair health insurance
Au pairs come to the US on a J-1 visa, so their health insurance must meet the US Department of State J-1 requirements: at least $100,000 of medical benefits per accident or illness, $25,000 for repatriation of remains, $50,000 for medical evacuation, and a deductible of $500 or less. TaiAn Plan S (TaiAn Exchange Select) is TaiAn's lowest-cost plan that meets these requirements, and TaiAn Plan B (TaiAn Patriot Exchange) costs a little more with no coinsurance. Both are available through TaiAn Financial, with service in Chinese and English by phone and WeChat.
Does my au pair agency already provide insurance?
Most au pair agencies include basic insurance. If you want more coverage, or need it after your program ends, TaiAn can help. Any TaiAn Plan B or Plan S option with $100,000 or more per illness or injury meets the federal J-1 standard.
What is the most affordable J-1 au pair insurance?
TaiAn Plan S with a $100,000 benefit per illness or injury is TaiAn's lowest-cost J-1 plan. It pays 80% in the UnitedHealthcare Options network after the deductible. TaiAn Plan B pays 100% after the deductible, in or out of network. You can pay monthly or by the day, so a stay of 2½ months costs 2½ months of premium. The TaiAn group plan saves 10%.
| Age | TaiAn Plan S, $500 annual deductible | TaiAn Plan B, $250 annual deductible |
|---|---|---|
| Under 25 | $38.10 | $53.70 |
| 25 to 49 | $49.80 | $68.70 |
| 50 to 64 | $106.50 | $141.30 |
What do the J-1 requirements include?
The US Department of State requires every J-1 visa holder and J-2 dependent to keep coverage that meets these minimums for the whole program:
- Medical benefits of at least $100,000 per accident or illness
- Repatriation of remains of at least $25,000
- Medical evacuation of at least $50,000
- A deductible of no more than $500 per accident or illness
- An insurer rated "A-" or above by A.M. Best (or an equivalent rating)
TaiAn Plan B and Plan S meet all of these with a benefit of $100,000 or more per illness or injury.
Can I see a doctor without a referral?
Yes. You can go straight to a doctor, urgent care clinic or hospital; routine office visits need no pre-certification. Using the UnitedHealthcare Options network usually makes billing easier.
